At the turn of the century — long before Instagram or Blogger — kevinsteele.com
was one of Toronto’s proto-photoblogs.
Camera in hand I roamed the city, sometimes uploading series the same day to my hand-coded site.

I shoot digital because I’m interested in photography as an input to digital media.
The near free cost of digital exposures allows me to explore picture taking/making
in ways I never could have with film.
¶
Since my mom gave me my first camerathe ’70s I’ve dabbled with many cameras: rangefinders, single- & twin-lens reflexes;
hand-made pinholes, instamatics, disposables & photo booths;
video and film movie cameras.
¶
Once I started to get my hands on decent digital cameras in the late ’90s I began shooting more and more.
¶
Shots from 2001-2003 were taken with my beloved Nikon Coolpix 990
,
a delightful swivelling design made possible by electronics.
I replaced that with a Coolpix 4500
,
already discontinued by the time I bought it.
I went through a few pocket cameras, most notably a Olympus Stylus 720SW, which was the size of a deck of cards, built like a tank and
waterproof.
In spring 2005 my mom gifted me a membership so I started posting new pictures on Flickr. I loved the site immediately because it was well-suited to my habits, and I found inspiration in the community, even going to local meet-ups.
Please contact me if you are interested in using a picture or have other photographic inquiries.
